The Fragrance from the Tomb
Pilgrims at the tomb · Annaya Monastery
Among the most frequently reported phenomena at the Monastery of Saint Maron in Annaya is a sweet fragrance — variously described as roses, incense, or 'a perfume unlike any other' — that rises from the tomb and from cloths that have touched the relics.
The fragrance has been noted by pilgrims of every faith and background, often without any prior knowledge of the tradition. It tends to appear suddenly, fills a small space, and disappears as inexplicably as it came. The monks have stopped trying to account for it.
Many of those who have experienced it report that it accompanies a moment of unexpected interior peace, the resolution of a long-carried burden, or a sudden conviction to change the direction of their life. They leave the mountain, as the saying goes in Annaya, 'carrying the perfume with them.'
